A Meeting Place

CENTRAL UNITED CHURCH
In 1847, the Government deeded a parcel of land on 3rd Avenue East to the Methodists for a church and burial ground.  In 1874, the Wesley and New Connexion congregations united to become Scrope Street Methodist Church. The first structure was a stone building that collapsed in February 1875.  A new church was then erected and on February 18, 1877 and the former Scrope Street Methodist Church was dedicated for worship.  In 1903, an addition was added on for Sunday School and Choir purposes.  In 1897, Scrope Street Methodist took on the name of First Methodist.  On June 19, 1925, the First Methodist was part of a union of churches that became The United Church of Canada, changing its name to Central United Church.  After extensive structural and decorative changes, the church reopened in a Jubilee Service on November 14, 1926. In 1951, ‘Hallett Hall’ was built onto the church. This was for Christian Education and a gym.  Between 1955 to 1985, renovations included rebuilding of the organ, different steeples, a Board Room, raised Choir loft, downstairs kitchen, a stage and offices, gas heating, insulation, roofing, windows, carpeting, painting, landscaping and sidewalks were installed.  In 1994 Central United closed its doors and amalgamated with Westside United Church.  Then in 1995, the building was razed, its windows, organ and furniture went off to other locations in Ontario.  Central Place Retirement Community was erected on the site.

WESTSIDE UNITED CHURCH
In 1889, a daughter church of the (Wesley and New Connexion Methodist Church) Scrope Street Methodist Church was established on the west side of the river on 11th Street West.  Then in 1896, West Street Methodist Church became an independent congregation and called its own minister. In 1911, Westside Methodist Church was erected at our present site.  The organ, a 1910 Karen-Warren Pipe Organ was brought over with them to the new church.  In 1925, Westside Methodist Church became part of The United Church of Canada and changed its name to Westside United Church.  In 1950, the organ was enlarged, and chimes were added.  Between 1978 and 1999, many upgrades were made including redecorating, lighting, parking area, offices, new Sunday School area, carpeting, more painting, organ refitting and a new roof. In 1994, Westside United Church amalgamated with Central United Church to become Central Westside United Church.

CENTRAL WESTSIDE UNITED CHURCH
In 1994, the two congregations came together in the former Westside building as Central Westside United Church.
